NBA Western Conference First Round Playoff Series Predictions and Support

No. 1 Suns vs. No. 8 Clippers/Pelicans

Nothing to see here. The Suns have dominated the league this season and aren’t looking for formidable opponents in the first round. They move easily (4 or 5 games).

NBA Playoff Bracket: They get the winner of the 4/5 matchup between the Mavericks and the Jazz below.

No. 2 Grizzlies (-330) vs. No. 7 Timberwolves (+260)

Odds provided by DraftKings

Did the Timberwolves win the NBA Finals? Do not? Well, you wouldn’t have known if you had seen her celebration on Tuesday. The Los Angeles Clippers completely screwed him up against the Timberwolves and Patrick Beverley finally got his tearful revenge against his old team.

Karl Anthony-Towns had an aberration in the inning game and posted some of the worst results of his career. However, that should improve substantially over more than one sample size. Still, look to the Memphis Grizzlies to roll here with one of the deepest teams in all of basketball, including shooters from all over. Memphis at 5 or (maybe) 6.

They would face the winner of Warriors vs. Nuggets.

Playoff Series Prediction: Grizzlies at 5 +300 (Draft Kings)

No. 3 Warriors (-225) vs. No. 6 Nuggets (+180)

Odds provided by PointsBet

With or without Steph Curry? That’s the main question when the Golden State Warriors take on Nikola Jokic and not much else. As of this writing, Steph Curry’s availability will be reduced all the way, according to Warriors coach Steve Kerr.

The same can’t be said for Nuggets starters Michael Porter Jr. and Jamal Murray, who aren’t expected to return during the playoffs. That leaves only Jokic and Aaron Gordon as legitimate starting players to get Denver past the first round.

Regardless, my expectation is that the Nuggets fade against the Warriors with or without Curry. Expect ‘Chef Curry’ to miss games until the Warriors actually lose in this series.

A date with Ja Morant and the Grizzlies looms for the winner of this competitive series.

Playoff Series Prediction: Warriors in 6 +375 (PointsBet)

No. 4 Mavericks (+240) vs. No.5 Jazz (-300)

Odds provided by BetMGM

Surely filled with regret, the Dallas Mavericks decided to play their starters in a nearly meaningless regular-season game on the final day of the season. The results were dire as their All-NBA player, Luka Doncic, missed out due to a calf injury. Once hoping to win the west, the Mavericks will really struggle to play without Doncic.

It’s unclear if he’ll miss the entire series or just a few games, but the injury seemed to be seriously hampering his mobility as he walked off the court (shown above). In particular, injury analyst Jeff Stotts said the median days off from this injury is 17 days with a low of 3. You’d expect the range for his return to be there.

The injury occurred on April 10 and Game 1 of the series is scheduled for Saturday, April 16. It’s unclear if he plays in any games in this series, but my best guess is a Mavericks return and series win in 6 or 7 games. The Jazz seems to be broken at the moment.

Without knowing the state of Doncic’s health it is difficult to make a prediction. I will continue to pick the Mavericks only because their odds are so high and my belief in the Jazz is almost zero. Let the Mitchell rumors begin to the Knicks.

Whoever wins this series will be an underdog when they take on the defending West champion Phoenix Suns.

Playoff Series Prediction: Mavericks win series +240 (BetMGM)
