According to a recent Deadline report, Chinese censors requested a cut that Warner Bros. agreed to “meet local requirements. Six seconds of the film were cut, all of which reference a past romantic relationship between Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore and wizard villain Gellert Grindelwald. The report notes that two lines were removed, including “because he was in love with you” and “the summer Gellert and I fell in love.” The first is a line of dialogue and the second is a voiceover.

Of course, this is not the first time that China has required a movie to be censored to remove the theme that focuses on same-sex relationships. Despite the censorship, the film debuted at No. 1 in China last weekend, grossing $9.8 million despite nearly half of the country’s movie theaters being closed due to the recent surge in COVID-19. in China.

In a statement from Warner Bros., the company acknowledged the censorship but said the “spirit” of the film, as well as the relationship between Dumbledore and Grindelwald, is still present despite the changes.

“As a studio, we are committed to safeguarding the integrity of every film we release, and that extends to circumstances that require making nuanced cuts to sensitively respond to a variety of factors in the marketplace,” the statement said. “Our hope is to release our features globally blocked by their creators, but we have historically faced small edits made in local markets. In the case of Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets, a six-second cut was requested and Warner Bros. agreed to those changes to meet local requirements, but the spirit of the film remains intact. We want audiences around the world to see and enjoy this film, and it’s important to us that Chinese audiences also get a chance to experience it, even with these minor edits.”
