A managerial saga tends to embody that of a horse race and with Manchester United seeking to find Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s long-term successor, that has never been truer.
In the race there have been players like Luis Enrique, Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag, but only one of them has overcome the final jump and has reached the final stretch.
It just so happens to be ten Hag, someone who has always been front and center in most of the races he has competed in.
Indeed, the Dutch coach has an impressive resume, winning the Eredivisie twice and taking home the Dutch national cup on as many occasions.
They came close to reaching the final stage in the Champions League too, only to be beaten by Pochettino’s Spurs in the semi-final in 2018/19.
Do you want to see Kane at Manchester United?
It’s funny how football works, though, because ten Hag is now set to beat that same man on the bench at Old Trafford, and he might as well take on one of Pochettino’s main men of yesteryear; Harry Kane.
United have often been linked with a move by the Tottenham striker and this summer is no different. That said, they may have to part with a whopping £100m or even more based on claims made in recent days.
However, if ten Hag is finally able to bring the England captain to Man United, it would be a remarkable way to introduce himself to the club’s fanbase.
In short, he would become an instant hit with the Old Trafford crowd, bringing a player to United who could not only make their rebuilding easier, but also bring them closer to the title in quicker fashion.
United have also often been linked with Erling Haaland, but in Kane, someone nicknamed an “animal” by football writer Andrew Gaffney, they would discover someone who is arguably even better right now.
The Norwegian powerhouse has admitted that the Spurs striker is better than him and considering his proven record in the Premier League, a move would certainly be less risky.
Haaland may have scored one more goal than the England international this season, but clearly the latter gives you much more than just being able to find the net.
When it comes to shot creation actions, Kane is out front at 3.26 per 90 minutes compared to Haaland’s 2.61, per FB Ref. Additionally, the progressive distance with which the former plays his passes is also considerably greater, averaging a whopping 115.8 yards per 90 compared to the Norway international’s measly 38.8 yards.
Additionally, the Tottenham star brings more from a defensive standpoint, earning more pressure per 90 within his own team’s pitch and in midfield.
Despite Haaland’s unbridled pace, it’s Kane again who stands out when it comes to progressing with the ball, making 3.94 progressive carries with the ball at the feet per 90 compared to Haaland’s 3.07.
With that in mind, it sounds like the 28-year-old would be a much better acquisition for the present.
Ten Hag must do everything he can to lure the striker to Old Trafford this summer.
And in other news, Man Utd are now plotting a £60m ‘special talent’ signing offer, he’s much better than Rashford…
