Over the last decade or so, the horror genre has seen its fair share of witch-centric stories. Now Yellow Veil Pictures and writer/director Gaspar Noah have thrown their hat in the ring with their next movie Eternal Lux. The film is set to be released next month and the first trailer for this unique atmospheric horror has just been released.
Not many trailers start with a seizure warning, but this trailer is full of flashing lights. If anything, this suggests a different kind of horror movie that fans of the genre haven’t seen before. The trailer itself is just a weird series of disorienting flashing lights mixed in with some fascinating footage and our cast of characters trying to make a movie. The description of the film gives us a little more information about the plot saying: “Beatrice Dale and charlotte gainsbourg they are on a film set telling stories about witches. Technical problems and psychotic breaks gradually plunge the shoot into chaos.”
Making a movie is hard enough, but it’s even harder when the crew goes haywire. From the sounds of it, this is a film that will take advantage of the stress of production and the various abuses that occur all too often on a set like this. At the same time, he also explores how someone can go crazy for his art. In between the flashy light show footage, there’s some teasing of some tense exchanges between the characters, and as the trailer digs deeper into the movie’s madness, it’s hard not to be at least intrigued by the unnerving atmospheric set-up.
However, despite this interesting trailer, the main reason to get excited about this movie is that Noah is behind the camera. This director has given us nothing but crazy horror movies in the past. enter the void, Irreversible, Vortexand Climax they have done their part to psychologically mess up their audiences. Climax in particular, it was very well received in the horror community, and had such a disturbing and unorthodox style. If you can stand the bright lights of this trailer, Eternal Lux seems to be more of the same singularly crazy.
Eternal Lux had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019, but the general release of the film was affected by COVID. The film stars Gainsbourg, Dalle, abbey lee (the neon demon), Carlos Gusman (Love), Claude-Emmanuelle Gajan-Maull (Climax), and Felix Maritaud (wild / wild, Knife + Heart). The film will open in New York on May 6 and in Los Angeles on May 13 before getting a wider release soon after.
