Knicks’ RJ Barrett expected to be ready for offseason workouts

With the worst case scenario averted, the Knicks expected RJ Barrett to be at full throttle in about a month for offseason workouts.

Additional tests on Barrett showed the preliminary diagnosis of a sprained knee was accurate after he landed wrong on a drive-and-dish to Jericho Sims late in the first half Friday at Washington.

Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau couldn’t rule out further ACL damage Friday night, but those concerns have since been allayed.

“Just a sprain,” Thibodeau said before Sunday’s 105-94 season-ending win over the Raptors. “So that’s the good news in a way.”

Very good news. The Knicks aren’t in the postseason, so he just missed Sunday’s game. The team will stay hidden for a while before Thibodeau hopes Barrett is ready.

“We are going to go into an active break, so there will be a three-week period where there will be some activity, but very light,” Thibodeau said. “Everyone is in recovery for the next three weeks. Then we’ll pick it up after that.

Thibodeau said he expects Barrett to be back by then. It’s a sigh of relief since Barrett was coming off a breakout season in which he averaged 20 points and showed All-Star potential.

“I’m always worried,” Thibodeau said of his feelings that night. “You never want to see that kind of awkward landing. But then he played. That part was encouraging. The next day he was in pain, but he said he felt fine. That was a good sign.”

Barrett, without crutches, watched Sunday’s game from the bench.

“I don’t know the exact details,” Thibodeau said of whether Barrett has already had his MRI exam. “He was examined by the doctors and trainers. What I have is that he is a sprain. We will just follow the protocol of the coaches and doctors and then when he is ready to play, he will go.

“One thing about RJ, whatever he can do, he will do. She will be in rehab, then in the pool, and then on her bike. RJ is a worker. He will do everything he can.”

While Barrett averaged 20.0 points, it could be seen as misleading due to his low shooting percentages: 40.8 overall, 34.3 from 3, and a modest 46.6 effective field goal percentage. But the No. 3 overall pick in the 2019 draft showed a relentless attack from the basket that was eye-opening.

Barrett, 21, will be in contention for a major rookie contract extension in October, even if he falls short of the maximum total of $181 million.

“I think RJ took a big step this year, he took on more responsibility covering the other team’s best player and he’s really elevated his game,” Knicks president Leon Rose said on MSG Network on Sunday regarding a contract extension. contract. “I really can’t put a limit on where he’s going to go. As for the plan and negotiations, I think we’ll keep it private for now.”

With the Knicks down to eight lengths, Thibodeau said he would give minutes of playing time on Sunday to new two-way signing Feron Hunt, who started the season with the G-League’s Texas Legends. He played seven minutes, missing a couple of shots from the field.

Hunt, a forward/power forward who prioritizes defense, has already impressed Thibodeau with his work ethic.

“Lots of energy, played two positions, great defender,” Thibodeau said. “Your shot of him is getting better. Just a multi-effort guy, just a long brim. Frontline boy. I think he adds to the team, so we’re excited to have him.”

Thibodeau feels he can protect the shooting guards as well.

“I’m impressed with the way he works,” Thibodeau said. “They were excited. He’s going to be here all summer, so we’re excited about that.”
