Juventus appears to have joined the race for Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard, who now has three options to choose from in Italy, according to a report.
Lingard is nearing the end of his contract with Manchester United. After playing opportunities proved limited at Old Trafford, he seems likely to leave.
In fact, a recent report from the daily mirror named Lingard as one of six players to leave manchester united no transfer fee.
Now, the same source has shed more light on where the attacking midfielder could end up. According to his website, three Serie A clubs are vying for Lingard’s signature.
The suitors in question are Juventus, AC Milan and AS Roma. A report last month confirmed Lingard had been offered to the last couple.but the link with Juventus seems fresher.
The Turin-based outfit are aiming to get Paul Pogba back from Man Utd on a free transfer this summer. Perhaps they could make a similar move for Lingard.
However, your preference may be to choose Rome instead. His interest stems from his previous relationship with former Red Devils manager José Mourinho.
Mourinho now oversees a reconstruction project in the Italian capital. Roma are preparing for a busy summer ahead of his second season in charge, when they hope to have a stronger team.
Lingard gave Mourinho a lot of credit for how he developed it early in his career. In addition, he remains in contact with his former teammate Chris Smalling, who has revived his career since he traded Manchester for Rome.
The same has happened with his England colleague Tammy Abraham, whose former Chelsea team-mate Fikayo Tomori has done the same with Milan. Currently leaders of Serie A, Milan could also be a tempting option.
The Rossoneri want to sign a winger this summer, which could turn into a thank you gift for manager Stefano Pioli if he leads them to the title. Lingard, who is also in contact with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, could be his man.
Lingard still has two suitors in the Premier League
However, there could still be a chance for the 29-year-old to remain in the Premier League. The report recalls that he is of interest to West Ham and Newcastle.
West Ham previously enjoyed having Lingard’s services on loan for the second half of last season. He scored nine goals in 16 productive appearances that put him back in contention for England.
However, his place with the national team is now at risk ahead of the 2022 World Cup, due to his lack of activity at club level. Since he returned to Man Utd, he has only managed two goals in 19 appearances (of which only three have started).
So a fresh start before the winter tournament might just be what you need. You will now have to choose between the Italian or English routes.
It may be due to the financial aspects of what could be his last big contract. The report claims that it is looking at a figure in the region of £150,000 per week, plus a login fee.
Newcastle may be best placed to pay for that after their Saudi-backed takeover last year. But there will be other factors to consider.
For example, your three Italian fans will probably have European football on offer next season. In the cases of Juventus and Milan, that should also be at the level of the Champions League.
Meanwhile, Roma and West Ham will have ambitions to finish in their respective division’s Europa League places.
Only time will tell which option Lingard chooses.
