Jesse Marsch key for Leeds as Man Utd hopes are extinguished amid fresh Kalvin Phillips claims

Leeds United are increasingly confident that Kalvin Phillips will sign a new deal with the club amid reports this week linking the player with a move to arch-rivals Manchester United.

The midfielder is a very popular figure on Elland Road, having grown up in the city and passed through its academy. Just over seven years since his debut, Phillips has racked up 227 appearances for Leeds and established himself in the England squad. In fact, with 19 caps to his name, Phillips hopes to play in the World Cup later this year.

However, the 26-year-old has endured a tough 2021/22 season on a personal level. After tearing his hamstring against Brentford on Dec. 5, Phillips is only now returning to action.

And in his long break, Leeds remained in danger of relegation and saw his mentor Marcelo Bielsa replaced at the helm.

Additionally, Phillips has been the subject of much speculation in recent weeks. With a contract due to expire in 2024, Leeds and Phillips have a big decision to make this summer.

Indeed, the West Yorkshire side would maximize their value by cashing in this summer. And amid speculation about his future, reports have touted Phillips for potential moves to a variety of clubs.

Those rumors have seen Phillips linked with the likes of Aston Villa, West Ham and Newcastle. more worrying, one report even detailed how a leading agent plans to get Phillips to Liverpool..

Lately, however, it is Manchester United that is most strongly linked, suggesting he is a target for new manager-in-waiting Erik Ten Hag.

However, despite speculation, TEAM talk he understands that moving to Old Trafford is not on Phillips’s mind.

Star ready to sign new deal with Leeds

As a local boy, he understands more than just the history between the two clubs. And knowing that moving there would leave a bitter taste, the Red Devils are the only club Phillips would be against moving to.

In doing so, he understands that moving to Old Trafford would destroy his Leeds legacy.

Also, Phillips is reportedly interested in signing a new deal in Leeds United.

The star is clearly worthy of a new deal and is understood to be willing to write an extension.

And, as Phillips prepares to return to Leeds’ starting line-up, there seems to be growing optimism that a deal can be struck.

That is a view also supported by transfer journalist Dean Jones. speaking to give me sportstates that Phillips is keen to stay in Leeds.

He further claims that Phillips was impressed by new boss Jesse Marsch and believes he can help the club progress.

“They’re starting to turn the corner,” says Jones. “He is really impressed by what Jesse Marsch has done so far. I think he is becoming more and more convinced to stay, but of course money talks.”

Ian Wright backs Kalvin Phillips to stay

Pundits Ian Wright is also backing Phillips to sign a new contract at Leeds and further his legacy at the club.

Ultimately, he knows that Phillips will have the ambition to play in the Champions League.

But as things stand, you can see him giving Leeds another season or two before he leaves.

“I was talking about Kalvin Phillips and people were talking about him leaving. But I think he should stay for a while. Why not?” Wright told the Wrighty House Podcast.

“He will be courted for how good he is at that position. And at some point he wants to play in the Champions League, because his level deserves it that way.

“But after getting injured, go back to Leeds, take them back to where we saw them when they first appeared and get them pushed.”

Leeds hope Phillips’ return to their side could be the catalyst for a strong result at Watford on Saturday. You can see who else Marsch will most likely choose our predicted Leeds line-up here.
