How To Know If Your Apple AirPods Are Charging: Explained

There are several things AirPods owners can do to check when their earphones are charging and help increase battery life.

of Apple AirPods are still some of the best wireless earphones you can buy, but after running out of earphone batteries, it’s important to know how to check if they’re charging. AirPods offer users a convenient way to listen to their music on the go. You can listen seamlessly without wires, switch between different Apple devices, and quickly talk to Siri with hands-free voice commands.

All AirPods come with a charging case that can hold both earbuds simultaneously. This case also has multiple charges for AirPods, making it easy to charge while away from a power outlet. To keep your AirPods charged, simply store them in the case when not in use. Carrying the case itself is also easy. All AirPods models support Lightning cable charging, while others work with Qi and MagSafe wireless charging.

While all of that sounds easy enough, everyone has been in a situation where they thought their device was charging, only to find out that it actually hadn’t changed at all. Fortunately, Apple makes it easy to check if your AirPods are charging. All AirPods cases come with a built-in status light (found on the front or inside of the case, depending on which model you have). If the status light is amber when the AirPods are in the case, the case is charging both earbuds wirelessly. Similarly, an amber light while the AirPods case is plugged in or on a wireless charger means both the case and the earbuds are charging. A green status light indicates that the battery is full and appears in different ways. A green light when the AirPods are in the case means both the earbuds and the case are fully charged. A green light on the case with no AirPods inside means the case has a full charge. Finally, if the AirPods case is plugged into a power source, a green light shows that it’s fully charged and can be unplugged.

If the status light isn’t helpful enough, AirPods users can also check their charging status right on their iPhone. Take your AirPods, bring them close to the iPhone they’re paired with, and open the top of the charging case. If your AirPods are in the case and charging, you’ll see a small lightning bolt icon next to each earbud.

You can also do this with the iPhone’s ‘Batteries’ widget. To add the widget, long press anywhere on the iPhone home screen. Tap ‘Edit Home Screen’, tap the ‘+’ icon in the top left corner, scroll down the page, tap ‘Batteries’, choose the size you want and tap ‘Add Widget’. Your AirPods battery now appears in the widget every time you open the case. If AirPods are in their case and charging, a lightning bolt appears above the earphones icon. Similarly, a lightning bolt shape appears above the charging case when it’s plugged in or on a wireless charger. Unlike the pop-up window (which disappears as soon as you tap the screen), your AirPods’ charging status remains in the Batteries widget even after you close the case.
