Every time Man City have played in a European semi-final

Manchester City have established themselves as one of the biggest clubs in Europe in recent years, but it was actually more than 50 years ago when they reached the semi-finals of a European competition for the very first time.

Here’s a look back at over half a century of Manchester City’s European semi-finals…

City’s first ever foray into European competition in 1968/69 ended in the first round and handed Fenerbahce one of their earliest wins in the European Cup. But the club earned a place in the now defunct UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup the following season by winning the FA Cup in 1969.

Led by the legendary Joe Mercer, they saw off opposition from Spain, Belgium and Portugal to set up a last four tie with Schalke.

A 5-1 victory at Maine Road in the first leg was inspired by Neil Young, Francis Lee and Colin Bell, also rendering a 1-0 defeat in the return leg in Germany pretty meaningless. City then went on to lift the trophy after beating Polish side Gornik Zabrze 2-1 in the final.
