avengers endgame Director Joe Russo reveals why the MCU movies have so much humor. Having grossed $25.6 billion at the worldwide box office, the MCU is the most successful film franchise of all time, and for the past 14 years, audiences have become engrossed in the characters and world of these heroes. The films stand out as some of the most important pieces of shared cultural moments of the 21st century, as dialogue has become quotable in everyday conversation.

A defining aspect of the MCU is the franchise’s sense of humor, which originated in 2008. Iron Man, due to the film not having a finished script and having to rely on the improvisational skills of Robert Downey Jr., for which director Jon Favreau was well prepared due to his comedic background. Russo reveals exactly why the MCU movies have so much comedy and says it’s the key to Marvel’s success. while talking with Deadlinevia directRusso revealed that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige likes to sample Marvel movies to see how audiences enjoy them. Feige wants the public to have a good time, and part of the way to do that is with humor. Russo said:

So, the audience laughs, you can hear their response. You can understand, ‘Okay, every 2 minutes [they] they’re kind of enjoying the movie,’ and that’s a solid way for him to gauge how the movie will perform with an audience, right? So I think humor is very important to him.”

The MCU’s style of humor has become so popular that it has been imitated by other studios and has now had a negative reception among some audience members as “Marvel Humor”. Some take issue with the franchise’s insistence on humor, as they feel it often deflates rather serious moments, and some criticize the franchise’s inability to take things seriously, such as making fun of Doc Ock’s name in Spider-Man: No Way Home, for example. However, even with all the humor, the MCU has been able to use it as a way to incorporate more noble themes into their films of racial politics in Black Panther to look at the devastations of colonialism and the impacts on refugees in both captain marvel and Thor: Ragnarökor the complicated nature between children and parents in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

However, despite the reaction to Marvel’s use of humor, the insertion of comedy into action movies is not something Marvel created. In fact, it goes a long way towards showing that the MCU doesn’t just rely on comics to inform its movies, but on cinematic influence as well. in search of the lost ark features a number of well-acted comedic beats that subvert audience expectations, most notably when Indiana Jones shoots the swordsman, which was not in the original script. pirates of the CaribbeanJames Bond and Star Wars are other major franchises that found ways to incorporate gags, gags, and humorous protagonists into their stories to keep the audience entertained.
