Cameron Carter-Vickers scores as Daryl Dike suffers fresh injury

After a chaotic international window in which the USMNT qualified for the 2022 Qatar World Cup, Americans abroad are now back in action across Europe.

In the Bundesliga, Gio Reyna played for Borussia Dortmund when Chris Richards made his first start for Hoffenheim since January 22. Elsewhere, Cameron Carter-Vickers scored the winner to inspire his Celtic side to a 2-1 win over Rangers.

Daryl Dike is back on the sidelines after recently struggling with the same leg injury he suffered in January. West Brom head coach Steve Bruce confirmed it was a sore tendon, which could force another delay in his return to the pitch.

“Big Dike was uncomfortable in training,” Bruce said. “The idea was if we can help him and be a small part today and then play him in the Under-23 game on Monday at The Hawthorns.

“[But] unfortunately, I was uncomfortable,” Bruce added. “It’s not exactly the same injury. They lead me to believe that it is a tendon below. It’s the same leg that was injured, so we’re not going to bet on that. We’ll have to see how it is. It’s a real shame because he has worked very hard to come back. But something is bothering him and we have to take every precaution we can.”

The USMNT made his official transfer to West Brom from Orlando City during the offseason, but has only made two appearances since his arrival. The player suffered a leg injury during his first start, which kept him watching from afar.

Carter-Vickers is capitalizing on his loan from Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic this season. The American defender became one of the highlights over the weekend after scoring the winner for his team to beat Rangers FC 2-1 at Ibrox Stadium.

His contributions put Celtic six points clear at the top of the Premiership table. It also served as Carter-Vickers’ fourth league goal of the season and first against the Rangers.

Richards is finally back on the field after two months sidelined with injury. The player appeared in the final 45 minutes of Hoffenheim’s 2-1 loss to Bochum, marking his first club appearance since 22 January.

He replaced Kevin Akpoguma at halftime to record two interceptions and complete 81% of his passes.

“We created good opportunities, but we couldn’t take full advantage of them,” Richards said. “Unfortunately, we lacked concentration in the key moments. The loss obviously hurts, we’ll have to put it in the back of our minds next week and do better in Leipzig.”
