While Coughlan is best known today as Penelope Featherington on the Netflix drama, the Irish actress was on the entertainment circuit long before that. After years of auditioning and working on stage, Coughlan was cast in a recurring role on derry girls. The sitcom was broadcast on British television and quickly became one of the most watched series of all time in Northern Ireland. She caught the attention of Netflix, which ended up signing the show for an international release in 2018. Coughlan was noted for her hilarious portrayal of scholar Clare Devlin.
Netflix clearly became a fan of Coughlan, announcing in 2019 that she would be joining the cast of Shonda Rhimes’ first streaming series. Bridgerton. However, before Coughlan wielded Penelope’s mighty pen and ink, it appears she was being considered for another Netflix mega-hit. while promoting Bridgerton season 2 said the star buzz who actually auditioned for a major role in Strange things years before. “I auditioned for Stranger Things several years ago… I auditioned to play Robin, Maya Hawke got it. She was so much better than I would have been.”
Although Robin was featured in Strange things season 3, she quickly earned her place as a fan favorite. Steve Harrington’s quirky and witty former classmate turned co-worker proved invaluable to the show’s main characters. While Coughlan wanted the role at the time, he went on to say that overall it was a good lesson to learn. He said that seeing Hawke in Season 3 showed him that not getting a part wasn’t personal. It was clearly Hawke’s role and not hers.
Coughlan isn’t the only now-successful star to reveal a yearning to play Robin in Strange things. In fact, CODA star Emilia Jones recently admitted that she came very close to landing the part. In both cases, everything went as it should. While it’s fun to imagine Coughlan challenging Steve in Scoops Ahoy or running around in The Upside Down, she’s right where she belongs. Bridgerton.
